An Exhibit by Sandra Paynter Washburn

January 31 — March 29, 2024

OPENING RECEPTION FRIDAY February 16 at 5:30 PM

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Sandy Paynter Washburn works in acrylic paint and mixed media, using a variety of substrates, such as canvas, board, and various papers.  She has done extensive experimentation within her medium, merging her classical training regarding the elements of art, color theory, and design principles with contemporary mixed media techniques and materials. Her working  model is that of a layerist who develops interesting surface textures before proceeding to color and subject matter considerations. In some cases, her paintings are purely acrylic, building layers of transparency, color, and texture with paint and gel. Other pieces Sandy makes are described as mixed media. One form of mixed media involves layering acrylic with various other mediums, including pen and ink, pencil, watercolor, and pastel. The other form of mixed media is layering acrylic paint with artist generated and found papers to develop a composition.

Sandy has been a producing artist and art educator for almost fifty years. She has participated in many group shows and has had several solo shows through her career. Her work is represented in private and corporate collections around the world. Sandy has earned signature status in Tennessee Watercolor, Southern Watercolor, and National Watercolor Society, and has earned numerous merit-based awards. Sandy is a BFA graduate from UNC-Greensboro, with post graduate work at NC State University. She has studied in workshops under some great contemporary artists. Recently Sandy found a mentor in Beverly Ann Burrows, a brilliant artist and art educator who now resides in Chattanooga, TN.
