“Hot Comb, Honey?” explores and celebrates the relationship between Black women and their hair. Following a set of live music by The Hardaway Sisters, "Hot Comb, Honey?" takes participants on an emotional, empowering journey from the middle passage to the present day. Theatrical vignettes are intertwined with collaborative conversation to create this cultural showcase. The show culminates with audience participation in the conversation—just like ladies at the beauty shop!
"Hot Comb, Honey?" is conceived and directed by Cynthia McCowan. McCowan has spearheaded and participated in many AACA cultural projects such as creating and directing "The Conversations of Black Folk," 2022's online docuseries that explored history and race in our community through open dialogue. "Hot Comb, Honey?" continues McCowan's trend of using frank conversation to examine questions that might generate some discomfort. The ultimate goal of these questions and the conversations they spark is to grow understanding, connection, and community.
