Description

In this 8-week class students will learn how to throw clay on a potter’s wheel. The instructor will cover the foundations of wheel work, including wedging and centering clay and forming cylinders, cups and bowls. Basic glazing information will help students finish their final forms. This is a beginner-level class. No prior clay experience necessary! We welcome all beginners, or those looking for a refresher course in wheel-throwing! This is also a good class to take if you have taken Shook’s beginner course before. There is still so much to learn!

About the Instructor

Patricia's journey with clay began as a young child, making sculptures of her favorite animals, whales and elephants, and as a young teenager sculpting a life size bust of a teen crush.

She obtained her BA in studio art: ceramics from Mary Baldwin College (now University) in 2015. She continued her ceramic education at The Visual Art Center studying pottery and other specialized ceramics. She fell in love with teaching at a Richmond recreation center, with classes for both adults and children. Patricia moved to Tennessee in the spring of 2022 and taught at the Appalachian Arts Craft Center during 2023, until she moved to McMinn County last December.

Patricia teaches through demonstration and individual coaching. She enjoys helping students progress from any stuck places in their journey with clay. Each person learns differently and Patricia takes that into account when demonstrating and explaining a process. She has collected a wealth of methods to correct and support throwing unique shapes on the wheel, as well as good tips for trimming and fine tuning a pottery form. This information is included in all her pottery classes. Patricia makes sure her students feel empowered and inspired in their class experience.
